Light Pole Banners
Banner Request Process
As an iconic higher education institution and UNESCO World Heritage Site, the University has chief guidelines and processes that direct how banners and other pageantry are displayed on and around Grounds. All light pole banner requests must follow the review process, as defined by the University's pageantry working group. Please refer to the Banner and Pageantry section for information on how to request light pole banners.
NOTE: Banners are not to be hung on facilities or building columns.
Light Pole Banner System
The institutional light pole banner design system is made up of three components, examples of which are below. These components are used in combination to form a series that reflects the institutional brand appropriately while being tailored to the area, School, location on Grounds, and other factors.
These three components are: 1) the University logo or mark, 2) lettered banner denoting the School or Unit/Area and 3) area- or theme-specific photography. Examples of these are below.
NOTE: These are for illustration purposes only – each banner series design must be approved by both University Communications and the Office of the University Architect.
1. University Logo and/or Mark
This component has one execution: the UVA Centered Logo.

2. Lettering
This component has two executions: orange and blue banners to denote the School or area.

3. Photography
Photography selection will be part of the design and development process, involving the area, University Communications and the Architect’s office.
NOTE: Below are examples only.

Full System In Use
As shown here, a typical application of the full system includes each of the three components described above: 1) the University logo or mark, 2) lettering and 3) photography. University Communications will work with your team to create options that fall within the University’s pageantry system and reflect your school or unit’s identity.
NOTE: These are for illustration purposes only – each banner series design must be approved by both University Communications and the Office of the University Architect.

Other Pageantry
All other University pageantry and signage must be reviewed and approved to ensure these materials meet brand standards. To initiate review and approval of temporary or permanent signage, please contact Reese Askins at rsw3nv@virginia.edu.
